As a young boy he loved trains. When he was six he disappeared and mom found him headed down to the train station. He always had to be doing something. Best friend from Richmond is Paul Randall. Th ey were both brought home in a police car after being seen on the school roof shooting home made match guns (they were made by Butch Hodgson, the son of Dad's close friend from work).
The family moved to Concord the summer before his senior year. He became friends with Tom and Janet Dost who taught him how to water ski and Randy later bought their Criscraft fiberglass boat from th e Dost family (Dad, Randy and Doug went in on it as a family boat and it was stored in our back yard behind dad's camper). It is the boat that I also learned to waterski with. Randy also made a stil l, hot air balloons, collected bees, and took a trip to Canada with Tom. Randy took Mimi, a cute blond, to his senior prom. He double dated with Brad and his girlfriend Sandy Beck. Randy went campl ing up at Russian River because he new Sandy would be at their families cabin there. they made a fire on the beach. Brad and Mimi were then left alone as Randy and Sandy became inseperable. Randy t ook Sandy to her senior prom the next year and the rest is history. Randy enjoyed his trip to Canada so much that he took Sandy there on their honeymoon.
After Randy's funeral Tom, Janet and our cousin Teresa Marie Moore told me the following stories:
In high school Randy made a detailed model of the proposed BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system that was said to be remarkable. He was a perfectionist and it always showed in his work. Tom and Rand y new a glass blower and made their own still. Janet remembers sitting and watching it bubble. Neither Tom nor Randy were drinkers at the time but Randy loved chemistry. Mom says the still was in h is room but Tom says the still was in the garage attack and that it leaked down on the car and ate through the paint. I suppose they may have put it in the attack when they were tired of it in his ro om.
Tom and Randy also started a bee collection service. People would call from all over to have them come and remove a swarm of bees from their property. They went as far as Escalon, CA, where dad's fr iends, Pete & Hazel Hodgson were then living. Their first attempt was not too successful in getting a swarm out of someones attack. They were stung numerous times and determined that they would no t attempt attacks again. When dad came home and saw their mess in the garage he told them that was not how they kept bees in Oklahoma. He showed them the proper way and we enjoyed fresh honey for ma ny years to come. We also had fruit trees and vines that benefitted from the bees but I was not fond of having them in our back yard. I never got stung but I was very afraid of them. I can remembe r when Randy and my father went to Dee's (Sandy's mother who lived down the street) to remove some bees from her back yard. After they had them in the hives on the truck I saw a massive swarm of bee s that had got through my father's protective suit and were in a solid clump on his chest. I was scared for his life but he and Randy were calm as could be and took it all in stride. That's not to sa y that they didn't get their share of stings through the years. In fact, when proposed marriage to Sandy his eyes were so swollen from recent bee stings that I told him I couldn't believe he would d o something like that when he looked like Spock on Star Trek.
When Tom and Randy went to Canada in his green triumph they stayed with our cousins who lived in Kent, WA. When they arrived they found that Uncle Chuck and Aunt Marie were on a trip and that their s on Terry Wayne had had a huge beer party the night before. They stacked up the beer bottles which stood as high as Randy. they took a picture of him standing next to it and that was hour Terry's par ents found out about the party. Tom and Randy were not beer drinkers but I think they got the blame anyway. Terry told Tom he could sleep in his sister's bed. When Teressa came home late that nigh t and flipped on her light she had quite a shock to find a strange boy in his underware sprawled out on her bed. Tom doesn't remember a thing of it but I took the liberty of introducing him to Teress a at Randy's after the funeral. It was good for a few needed laughes.
