Woodlands Plantation, Parish of Barolin, Burnett River, is the property of Charles FAULKNER. (Established about 1871 and closed in the early 1900's.) It is one of the first taken up in the district having been selected by the present proprietor seventeen years ago. It contains in all about 372 acres, 250 of which are under cane. For about ten years, Mr. Faulkner cultivated maize, and at the end of that period , extended his operation by speculating in the cane growing industry. So successful was he in this, that three years later he erected a mill and complete crushing plant at a cost of about #4000. This mill has a daily capacity for about 8000 gallons of juice which, after crushing is conveyed a distance of 7 miles to the Millaquin Mill Refinery for treatment. Last year's cutting amounted to 140 acres of cane, the proprietor anticipating equal results for the present season. The mill and plantation give constant employment to from four to ten Europeans and from 55 to 60 Polynesians. Mr. Faulkner is a native of England and was born in 1820 in Lincolnshire. He came to Australia in 1848 and landed in Brisbane. We worked as a goldminer on the fields of California, Victoria, Gympie and NSW, and settled in Maryborough 28 years ago. After remaining in the latter place twenty years he settled in the Bundaberg district, and selected his plantation as hereinbefore described.

By 1860 had bought land in Maryborough. Went mining at Gympie in 1867, but returned to Maryborough then came to Bundaberg with Walter Adams and George Noakes in 1871 to Woongarra Scrub between Bundaberg and Burnett Heads. They gained access via the Barolin Track having agreed previously to select their allotments in alphabetical order. Their selections were surveyed in March 1872 by Surveyor Barnes. Charle's property "Woodlands" comprised 372 acres of rich red volcanic soil intermixed with black scrub and black soil swamp pockets. By 1880 a permanent residence was erected and the family settled in, with barracks, barns, stables etc. He held his Maryborough property till about 1882. Ten children were born to Charles and Emma including twins, one of whom died at two months of age.

Before living at "Woodlands", they were on Bargara Rd, East Bundaberg. At this period the Burnett Hds Rd was behind Woodlands house, but owing to its passing through a swamp was shifted to its present situation some five chain in front. All of the timber for the house had to be floated down the river as far as Strathdee's rocks, loaded into drays and carted to the site of erection. The cast iron pipes used to carry juice from the farm to the mill were reclaimed in the 1930's for scrap.

"Woodlands" had a buggy and pair... greys first and later, chestnuts. The buggy was hooded, closed -in affair with seats facing each other.
