  • Notes
    • From the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4240 Folio 53 Page 9) John William, 2, was living with his parents David, 33, a Miner in a Copper Mine, and Jane, 31, in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were his sibling scholars David, 5, and Mary Anne, 4.

From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 5602 Folio 34 Page 27) John (William), 12, a Mariner, was living with his parents David, 44, a Miner, and Jane, 41, in Chapel Square, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were his sibling Scholars Mary Ann, 14, Lisa Jane, 9, and Elizabeth, 7. Lodging with them were cousins Mary Ann Williams, 4, Elizabeth Williams, 3, and William Morris Williams, 8 months.

From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5417 Folio 61 Page 8), John Evans, 22, Mate, of the 'Olive Branch', was aboard the 99 ton schooner in Milford Haven along with the rest of the crew consisting of Captain Owen Williams, 43, Master, William Perry, 25, and Richard Hughes, 19, Able-bodied Seamen, and the Boy, John Cook, 16.

There is also a snippet in 'A Real Little Seaport' by Lewis Lloyd: Evans, John (1858- ) Mariner. Aberdovey. In 1875-76 he was serving on the schooner 'Martha & Harriet' (139 tons), aged 17, as Cook and Seaman at £2 15s. a month. He was paid off at Liverpool 17/1/1876 when the balance of his wages was 10s. He signed again at Liverpool 29/1/1876, but for some reason he did not join the 'Martha & Harriet' before she sailed for Oporto. John Evans served as an Ordinary Seaman on the schooner 'Maglona' in 1876 and by 1882 he was a Able Seaman aboard the schooner 'Olive Branch'. He was paid off at Swansea 28/2/1882.
