  • Notes
    • I believe that George CLARE (b. 1823) first married Elizabeth (b. 1823) (possibly Elizabeth MARTIN or Elizabeth ROSE in Dudley), in about 1845. They had at least two children Thomas (b. 1846) and Edwin (b. 1850). There is a record of the death of an Elizabeth CLARE recorded in June, 1855 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire (Volume 6b, Page 55). Sometime between 1855 and 1860 George marries Sarah (b. 1824) and they have a few more children. Fanny (b. 1846) and Samuel (b. 1848) were possibly Sarah's from her previous marriage. Edwin (b. 1850) was George and Elizabeth's child, as was Edward (b. 1851) and maybe Matilda (b. 1854). There is then a gap to William (b. 1859). Finally, there came Sarah A(nn) (b. 1860). Whether Matilda was produce of George and Elizabeth or of Sarah and her previous husband is yet to be resolved. I have found no record of marriage between Edward Willis and Mat(h)ilda. There is a possible marriage record of an Edward James WILLIS and an Ellen Matilda BATHE in Cricklade, Wiltshire in September 1871. This leads us to the possibility that Sarah was a BATHE before she married George. Again, I find no record of George and Sarah getting wed and so I can't, as yet, prove this.

Assuming the above is correct ...

From the 1851 Census (HO107 Piece 2021 Folio 25 Page 13) George, 27, a Mining Labourer born Bilston, Staffordshire, was with his (first) wife Elizabeth, 27, also born Bilston, Staffordshire. They were living in Bilston, Staffordshire. With them were their children Tho(mas), 5, and Edwin, 1, both born Bilston, Staffordshire.

From the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 2042 Folio 110 Page 6) George, 38, Labourer in a Colliery, born Sedgley, Staffordshire, was with his (2nd) wife Sarah, 37, born Tipton, Staffordshire. They were living in Tipton, Staffordshire. With him were his (step)daughter Fanny, 15, born Sedgley, and (step)son Samuel, 13, Coal Miner, born Tipton. Also present were his two sons, Edwin, 11, born Sedgley, and Edward, 10, born Tipton, and his daughter Matilda, 7, born Tipton, from his previous marriage. Finally, his children from his marriage with Sarah are also present, namely William, 2, and Sarah A(nn), 5 months, both born Tipton.

From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 2950 Folio 104 Page 5) George, 48, Colliery Watchman, was with his wife Sarah, 47, in Bilston, Staffordshire. Also with him were his son-in-law Edward Willis, 19, a Miner in a Coal Pit, born Tipton, Staffordshire and his daughter(-in-law) Mat(h)ilda, 17, General Servant. Also with him were his children William, 11, and Sarah Ann, 10.
