A letter From Charles Vivian to Boulton & Watts Agent for Cornwall, Thomas Wilson of Truro regarding Hornblower
s engine at Wheal Wherry, Penzance.

      Camborne 16 November 1792
      Sir,
I saw Mr Carne , Oxnam & C at Herland Account who said it was agreed for Hornblower to build the Engine on the Wherry that the Engine house was sat & that the water could not be got as some of the land holders would not give liberty ( I believe Dr Moyle & partners put them in that mind ) Mr John Penrose & Captain Teague proposed to take the mine on tribute for a term of years to give the adventurers 5 1/4 doles to keep the Engine Bridge & C in repair and drive a level from shore - the Adventurers to be at the expence of building the engine and bridge - There is to be a general meeting soon of which you
l have timely notice & hope you
l attend as we may consult the Western set - shall go to Mr Curtis tomorrow to try for a view of the Wherry set & am Sir
      Your very humble servant

Charles Vivian went to Neath from Camborne early in 1793 and was employed by the Fox family at the Neath Abbey Iron Company as Agent or Manager.
He is mentioned several times in the book The History of the Vale of Neath by D.Rhys Phillips in his involvement with the Neath Abbey Iron Comp.

A letter written by Charles Vivian to Mr. John Powell, Attorney at Law, Brecon

      Neath Abbey 9 Sept 1797
      Mr Powell
      Sir
4.15.4 I find that David Manery or Mainwaring is served with a notice respecting the affairs of the late Lewis Williams. Mainwaring is the Captain of a small sloop belonging to this Co. I some long time since had his anchor repaired at Mr Williams shop. I shall be much obliged if you stop any cost on this head untill we have made some further enquiry into the matter. I have not heard any thing since I last saw you about the wharf.
I am Sir For the Neath Abbey Iron Comp.
      Your Obedient & Humble Serv.

      Charles Vivian.

At a meeting of The Neath Abbey Iron Co. held at Perran Wharf Nov. 14th 1797. Present Jno. Gould, Geo. Fox, Peter Price, Saml Tregalles jnr., Williams & Thos. Wilson. Resolved , that Charles Vivian deliver to Robson & Rees all the iron the company can spare received from Mr Tanner; at the same price it cost the Co.

I believe Charles may have left his employment at Neath and moved to Tredegar to work for the Tredegar Iron Company or maybe to Blaenafon to work for The Baenafon Iron Company sometime in the early 1800s. His brother-in-law Johnson Vivian Tippet who was with him at Neath was at Blaenafon in 1803 according to the birth of his second son John Tippet. Charles
daughter Elizabeth married Jonathon Miles a Pattern Maker at The Tredegar Iron Works in 1818 at St Sannan
s Parish Church, Bedwellty. His son Charles Vivian was an Agent at The Tredegar Iron Works in 1830 and his son John Vivian died in Tredegar of an accident in 1838. Jonathon and Elizabeth were still at Tredegar in 1841 living at Iron Street along with their two children Mary and Charles and also Mary Vivian, Elizabeth
      s sister.
      Edward & William Vivian, Charles
blind children were in 1841 living at Tucking Mill, Camborne with their cousins William Vivian of the Vivian Iron Foundry, and Francis Vivian who lived at Tolgarrack, Tucking Mill. Edward although blind worked at the Bickford, Smith & Co. Safety fuse factory and was also a Sunday School Teacher there from 1824 to 1882. Charles & Mary must have retired back to Cornwall taking their blind sons with them. His daughter Mary Vivian who was at Tredegar in 1841 moved to Tucking Mill, Camborne sometime in the 1840s and died in 1850 when living with her cousins Francis & Catherine Vivian and also her brother William Vivian at Tolgarrack, Tuckingmill.

Charles Vivian may have had two children born out of wedlock in Camborne.
Charles Tallack bap. 11 Dec. 1779 Father reputed to be Charles Vivian, mother Margaret Tallack.
Benjamin Chapel bap. 11 Dec. 1779 Father reputed to be Charles Vivian, mother Sarah Chapel.
I think he must have had another daughter born in Wales, Nancy or Anne. In a letter sent to my great, great grandmother by her cousin Charles Miles it mentions an aunt Nancy that emmigrated and lived in America. Also at a Bible Christian meeting at Tuckingmill in 1852 it mentions William Vivian and his brother Edward, Wesleyan Local Preachers and who along with a sister were all born blind were invited to the platform.

Charles Vivian died on 1st April 1924 According to a family bible owned by John Storm Roberts of Torrence, N.Y. State. I have no confirmation of this date or place of burial. See notes on Catherine Vivian b. 1693 for entries in that bible. [3]
