- 1871 census aged 3. Living in 'Bratton Fleming Village'. Lives with Father William, 53, mother Grace, born Atherington, Devon, 45, brother William, 20, Samuel, 10, Thurra, 8, Alfred, 3, Alice and Mary Ann both 1 (twins?). Father and eldest brother are carpenters in the village.
1881 census. 'Freddy' Gill, 13, b. 1868 Bratton Fleming. Working at Higher Axton (Haxton?)farm , Bratton Fleming for John Joslin farmer of 238 acres. Joslin employs 4 servants.
Perhaps he and Mary met during this time as they would have been neighbours.
1891 married to Mary sometime between October to December and living at Haxton Down. This means that Mary conceived out of wedlock, hence the name Lottie Rowe Gill for their daughter.
1901 census lived in 'Haxton Down' Bratton Fleming with Mary (scribed as May?) and the 3 children, plus Elizabeth, Mary's widowed mother.
Fred passes Haxton Down to the Burge family in 1920 who still farm there today.
Fred and Family (Fred, Mary, Leonard, Mansell) move to Tossells Barton Farm.
After Fred's death, Mansell continues to farm Tossells and passes down to his son. [2]
