    • When did they get married? If my theory about Isaac is correct then it follows that Richard and Anne would have married after 1868 and before Polly was born about 1875 ...

Name: JONES, Richard; Record Type: Marriages; Quarter: June; Year: 1874; District: Machynlleth; County: Caernarvonshire Merionethshire Montgomeryshire Powys; Volume: 11b; Page: 297.

Name: JONES, Anne; Record Type: Marriages; Quarter: June; Year: 1874; District: Machynlleth; County: Caernarvonshire Merionethshire Montgomeryshire Powys; Volume: 11b; Page: 297.

From the Marriage Certificate, 1874, Marriage solemnized at the Register Office in the District of Machynlleth in the County of Montgomery. No. 114, Fifteenth May 1874, Richard Jones, Age 25 years, Bachelor, Farm Servant, Residence Esgairweddan Towyn, Father's name Evan Jones, Father's occupation General Labourer + Anne Jones, Age 25 years, spinster, Residence Esgairweddan, Father's name Evan Davies, Father's occupation Lead Miner. The marriage was witnessed by John Jones and Susan Williams.

If the above is correct the only Lead Miner by the name of Evan Davies that I can find in 1871 (RG10 Piece 5604 Folio 23 Page 10) was aged 53 and living in Tybach, Noddfa, Darowen, Montgomeryshire, Wales. With him were his wife Ann, 46, and children Thomas, 22, Lead Miner, David, 15, Scholar, Rachel, 10, Scholar, James, 7, Scholar, and Margret, 2. Evan was reportedly from Carmarthenshire (N.K.) whilst the rest of the family were from Darowen.

The family appear in Tynllwyn, Noddfa, Darowen, Montgomeryshire, Wales in the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4242 Folio 34 Page 31). Evan, 42, Lead Miner now from Llanwenog, Cardiganshire was with his wife Ann, 37, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire, and their children Elizabeth, 8, Scholar born Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, Mary, 7, Scholar born Darowen, Montgomeryshire, Evan, 5, born Darowen, Montgomeryshire, and David, 2, born Darowen, Montgomeryshire.

Interestingly, on the same 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4242 Folio 31 Page 24) there was Anne Jones, 15, Lead Miner's Daughter staying with her grand-parents Richard Jones, 70, Farmer of 180 acres from Pennal, Merionethshire, and Elisabeth, 58, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire. Also present were the couple's children David, 35, Farmer Son from Pennal, Merionethshire, Humphrey, 26, Farmer Son from Pennal, Merionethshire, Mary, 38, Farmer Daughter born Pennal, Merionethshire, servant Evan Jones, 14, Horses Driver from Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire and visitor Humphrey Jones, married, 32, Local Preacher of Wesleyan also from Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.

In 1851 the Davies family are in Aberhosan, Penegoes, Montgomeryshire (HO107 Piece 2495 Folio 138 Page 10). Evan Davies, 33, Lead Miner from Cardiganshire, Ann his wife, 26, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire, and sons Thomas, 1, born Cemes (sic), Montgomeryshire, and Evan, 1 month, born Penegoes, Montgomeryshire. This Evan must have died young as they named another child Evan who was born about 1856.

The Jones family, meanwhile, were in Cefncochucha, Noddfa, Darowen, Montgomeryshire, Wales (HO107 Piece 2495 Folio 414 Page 2). Richard Jones, 60, was a Farmer of 100 acres employing 2 labourers and hailed from Penal (sic), Merionethshire. He was with his wife Elizabeth, 43, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire, and children Mary, 29, Farmer's Daughter born Penal (sic), Merionethshire, David, 27, Farmer's Son born Penal (sic), Merionethshire, Humphrey, 16, Farmer's Son born Towyn, Merionethshire, and grand-daughter Anne, 5, Home, now from Penal (sic), Merionethshire. The household had two servants: Rowland Hughes, 18, Farm Labourer from Garthbeibio, Montgomeryshire and Catherine Griffiths, 18, House Servant from Cemmaes, Montgomeryshire.

It would appear that Elizabeth was Richard Jones's second wife as from the 1841 Census (HO107 Piece 1429/16 Folio 6 Page 6) Richard, 50, Farmer was at Desyrnant, Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were Ann, 50, (presumably his first wife), John, 20, Mary, 20, David, 15, Richard, 10, and Humphrey, 5. It would appear there were three other people present on Census night: William Roberts, 50, Miner, Ann Thomas, 45, Female Servant, and John Foulks, 70, Ind(ependant means).

Moving on to the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5479 Folio 17 Page 5) Evan Davies, 62, (Road) Labourer from Llanybyther, Carmarthenshire, was with his wife Ann, 55, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire, at 13 Darowen, Noddfa, Darowen, Montgomeryshire, Wales. With them were their children David, 22, Farm Servant, Margreat, 11, Scholar, and Grand-daughter Elizabeth, 9, Scholar, all born Darowen, Montgomeryshire.

The question remains; How are these people connected? Was Anne Jones (Hen Nain) b 1847 the illegitimate daughter of the Ann that married Evan Davies and was she, in turn, the illegitimate daughter of the Ann that married Richard Jones?
