  • Notes
    • From the 1841 Census (HO107 Piece 1429/12 Folio 10 Page 12), John, 6, is living with his parents, John, 45, and Mary, 34, in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. John senior is described as being an Ag(ricultural) Lab(ourer) and of being born in the same county as the Census (Merionethshire). Mary was not born in the same county (she was born in Cardiganshire). John junior was born in the same county as were his siblings Owen 3, Lewis 1, Jane 12, Ann(e) 11, Susan(nah) 8, and Ellinor 5.

I wonder where John was in 1851? Was he a Boy aboard some vessel or other at the age of 16/17??

There is a good chance that John, 27, was Mate aboard the Meirion Lass as indicated by the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4492 Folio 139). The Meirion Lass was then a 52 ton Smack from Aberdovey at anchor in Plymouth Sound. Master of the vessel was Elias Lewis, Married, 35 from Llanon, Cardiganshire. Also aboard were two Boys, James Griffiths, Unmarried, 16 from Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales and Jeremiah Williams, Unmarried, 15 from Portmadoc, Caernarvonshire.

From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 5603 Folio 87) we have John Williams, widower, 36 aboard the vessel Mersey at Aberdovey. He is, of course, the Master of the vessel. With him is his son, John, age 6, Son of Master, born Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 2348 Folio 130 Page 8), John, 48, is again with his son, John, 16. This time they are aboard the vessel Jane Owens in Penzance Cornwall. The 'Jane Owens' was built in 1858. John senior is Married and is the Master and John junior is Unmarried and an OR(dinary)Seaman. The rest of the crew are the Mate, David Evans, Married, 25, A B Seaman, Richard Morgan, Unmarried, 19 and the Boy, John Thomas, Unmarried, 14. The entire crew hail from Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 44 Page 2), John, 58, is with his second wife, Mary, 49, at 43 Copper Hill Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. Living with them are their offspring John, S(ingle), 26 and a Master Mariner, Richard, 13, David H(ughes), 10, Jane A(nne), 8 and Owen (Davies), 5, all Scholars and all born in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 5190 Folio 30 Page 2), John, 66, a Mariner, was with his wife Mary, 59, at 43 Copper Hill Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With them were their children Richard, 23, a Stone Mason, David Hughes, 20, a Carpenter, Jane Anne, 17, and Owen Davies, 15.

From the book 'A Real Little Seaport' :-

505 WILLIAMS, JOHN (1833- ) M.M. By 1891 (Census) John Williams, aged 58, a Mariner and Fisherman, was living with his wife and family at 43 Copper Hill Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. John and his wife Mary were Aberdovey-born. Mary Williams was then 49. Five children were recorded: John Williams, junior, single, aged 26, a Master Mariner (see below); Richard Williams, 13, Scholar; David H. Williams, 10, Scholar; Jane A., 8, Scholar; and Owen Williams, 5, Scholar. All 5 were Aberdovey-born. John Williams, senior, was Welsh-speaking whilst his wife spoke both languages. John Williams, junior, was also Welsh-speaking, but it is certain that he and his father could speak English. The younger children, including, it seems, young Owen, aged 5, could speak both Welsh and English. After serving on the Emily Grace of Swansea, John Williams, Grove Place, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales, joined the schooner Jane Owens as Mate at Aberdovey in 1873 having been discharged from the Emily Grace at Swansea 1/7/73. Discharged at Garston (Liverpool) 15/9/73, he re-joined the Jane Owens as Master. Lewis Williams (below) was appointed Mate. John Williams then continued as Master of the schooner Jane Owens until he was discharged at Aberdovey 18/5/1888. His son John (below) was appointed Master of the Jane Owens at Hull 5/7/1888 and the vessel was lost 31/12/1888 (see Profile in Appendix V). The crew were formally discharged at Holyhead. It seems likely, therefore, that Capt. John Williams retired from seafaring in May 1888, in his mid-50s, to become a Fisherman as recorded in 1891. At present, his early career is obscure. A John Williams was Mate of the schooner Azoff (71 tons) 1 /1 /1863, aged '27'. A John Williams was Master of the schooner Frances Poole by July 1867. One, both or neither may have been John Williams (b.1833). FreeBMD: Marriage to Elizabeth Morris, Dolgelly, qtr Mar 1863 (parents are William and Mary in 1841 Census).

Vessel lost \emdash On Tuesday evening a telegram was received here with the news that the schooner Jane Owen, owned by Captain John Williams, Grove-Place, had struck on the Smalls and foundered. The crew were picked up by a passing steamer and landed at Holyhead. She was bound home from Plymouth - Cambrian News, 4 January 1889.
