Captain of 'Sarah Davies' F.R.A.S. and F.R.G.S.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 44 Page 2), John, S(ingle), 26 and a Master Mariner, is with his father John, 58, Mariner and Fisherman and his stepmother, Mary, 49, at 43 Copper Hill Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. Living with them are his half-brothers Richard, 13, David H(ughes), 10 and Owen (Davies), 5, and his half-sister Jane A(nne), 8, all Scholars and all born in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 5190 Folio 37 Page 16) John, 36 and still a Master Mariner, was living with his second wife Maggie, 27, at 2 Cliffside, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With them were their sons John M(orris), 1, and Richard O(wen), 6 months.

From the book 'A Real Little Seaport' :-

510 WILLIAMS, JOHN (1865- ) M.M. Aberdovey. A son of Capt. John Williams (b. 1833) by his wife Mary, he joined the schooner Jane Owens, commanded by his father, as Boy at Aberdovey 22/3/1877. His progress was rapid and he assumed command of the Jane Owens at Hull 5/7/1888. Sadly, the Jane Owens was lost off the Smalls 31/12/88 and the crew were formally discharged at Holyhead 2/1/1889. John Williams soon gained another command since in 1889 he was appointed Master of the schooner Sarah Davies (90 tons). His home ashore was then No.35 Copper Hill Street, though in 1891 (Census), aged 26 and single, he was under his parents' roof at No. 43 Copper Hill Street (a Master Mariner). Subject to a short break in1899, John Williams remained in command of the Sarah Davies until 1900 (the vessel was transferred to Dublin 30/12/1904). His home ashore was still No. 35 Copper Hill Street in 1900 when he was aged 35, but he seems to have moved to No. 2 Cliff Side, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales, at this time. He also became Master of the schooner Dovey Belle (84 tons). Built in 1867 at Aberdovey the Dovey Belle was registered No. 9 in 1867 at Aberystwyth and she became the last locally built sailing vessel to ply to and from Aberdovey on a regular basis. The Dovey Belle foundered off Grassholm 17/7/1907.FreeBMD: Possible birth registrations: 1) Machynlleth, qtr Mar 1864 (Vol 11B Page 193) NO 2) Machynlleth, qtr Mar 1866 (Vol 11B Page 193)

1881 Census: Residence: 2 Cliffside, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales - incorrect, Cliffside is not in 1881 Census and was unoccupied in 1891!

1897 Marriage certificate to Maggie: Residing at Grove Place, Aberdovey. Aged 31 on 10/02/1897. Married at Shiloh Chapel, Aberystwyth.

      1891 Census: Occupation: Master Mariner.
