      Hi Phil,

Hi Cousin. You must be a cousin but I haven't been able to find out where our lines converge.

I wonder where you found the info on Gran's earlier trip to Australia? She would only have been 19 then - and her name would have been Jopling. I know nothing of an earlier trip to Australia - no surprises there though as my Gran was a great one for secrets!

There's a very good reason why you couldn't find marriage records for Winnie. There aren't any. I opened a hornets nest when I began to research the family tree!
The truth is Gran had a war time fling, the result of which was the birth of my mother, Joyce W Henderson.
She told the world she was a war time bride; that his name was James Donald Henderson from Invergordon in Scotland and that she was a war widow etc etc. -
Further research - including a visit to Invergordon - failed to find this paragon of virtue who supposedly died a hero.

I can understand how tough it must have been for her - the times were harsh on unmarried mothers. And she was the daughter of a Baptist minister as well! Poor girl.
I don't blame her - but she wove such a tissue of half-truth and downright lies it took my breath away.
To add insult to injury she then went to live with a married man (she told us that she was married to him and all, but he died) named James Wilhelm Durrant who I think was the father of Uncle Gordon (though he was baptised Jopling) and Aunt Jean who is still alive and well in Queensland.
It is no wonder - that when J. Durrant went back to his wife - she fled to Australia.
The thing I find hard to forgive was that when she left - she left my eight-year old mother behind in the care of her older sister - for five years.
Mum came to Australia in 1930, a thirteen year old girl alone and unescorted. Enough said on that subject!!! Except to say I finally found Mum on her trip. She sailed in the name of Joyce N Durrant.

Anyway if it wasn't for that dear old butter wouldn't melt Grannie - I wouldn't be here...so there you go.

My mother was a lovely lady. She became a governess and taught some children at a remote cattle station in Western Queensland, where she met Dad, Donald McDonald, and they married in 1940.
I can't say they 'settled down' because they had the most extraordinary life together. They had five children: Diana Mary (1942) Donald Malcolm (1944) John Douglas (1946-2012) me - Patricia Jean (1949) and Walter Keith (1951).
Diana married Ron McDougall in 1975: Three children: Alastair Scott 1977 (wife Guilia Asnicar, children Matthew, Emma, Braydon and Rana - living in Brisbane) Rohan (1979) wife Dee-Anne - now estranged, no children; and Julia (husband Warwick Caldwell - now estranged, sons James and Daniel). Don married Zonda Reed, two sons Zane and Marshall. Marshall never married, Zane with the lovely Donna, one son Jayben. John - the gentle Jacko - never married.
I made up for it. Married Bryan Parnham in 1970. One gorgeous daughter Laurel (1977) who married Bobby Upton; sons Aydhan Julius (2003) and Bailey James (2008). Bryan and I divorced after 10 years. Remarried in 1984 - Peter Thomas; he died six years later. Married again in 1994. Bob Chesterman. We have been together now for 21 years! Yay!! .and finally my little (big) brother Keith. He has also had three marriages; Pamela Kuswalski was the mother of his children, who are Theresa McDonald = Steven Peebles, children Hayden and twins Laclan and Cooper, and Keith's son is Carl, married to Jessica. No children.

I have done this by virtue of the little grey cells - but I can dig up full dates if you need them for your file.

Do keep in touch Phil. I really would love to hear some of your story.

      Cheers,

      Tricia.

      and James
