  • Notes
    • James Clark Johncock was born on the 1st September 1818 at St Nicholas At Wade, Kent and christened in the local church on 3rd January 1819.

James moved from Thanet and made his way to London where he joined the Metropolitan Police Force on 5th October 1839. He was described as being 5ft 9, with auburn hair and hazel eyes and a fresh complection. He had no distinguishing marks.

His Warrant number was 15404 and his referees were Mr Henry Pett, St Nicholas at Wade and Mr J White, Hale Farm, St Nicholas At Wade.
At James' time of joining, in October 1839, the police force totalled 3487 men.

His cousin Henry joined some years later on 10th June 1844, warrant number 21261. Division C.
His referees were Rev John Hilton, St Nichs and Mr John Dadds, Church Warden, St Nichs.

James' pension record states that he joined C division and was promoted to Police Sergeant on the 19th January ****. He was then promoted to B division on the 18th May 1853.

They are found on the 1851 census as living in 45 and 50 King Street, St Annes Soho, Westminster, with their wives, who it seems were sisters!
James was a sergeant and Henry a police officer.

Fate took hold and Henry was to die, in service from what was described as brain fever on the 18/4/1853, leaving Harriett and a small son Amos.

James resigned from the police force on the 14/11/1856 on account of being 'worn out'. He received a pension of £31.00 per annum. He started new employment at the Woolwich Arsenal some time later as a labourer.

On leaving the Police Force James and Eliza lived at 43 Morton Terrace, Pimlico

Between 1856 and 1857, the family moved from Middlesex to Plumstead.

In 1857 James had a son, born at 7 Castle Terrace Plumstead.

In 1861, the family were living at
      14 Upper Maxey Road
      Congleton Terrace,
      Plumstead.

By 1881, Mary Ann and Eliza Jane, had left the property and only James Junior remained at home.
The family were now living at 1 Parry Place, Plumstead.
Eliza moved in with James Junior, when he married his wife Ann.

In 1891, the family were settled at 29 Gordon Dwellings, Camberwell.

James Clark senior remained in the family home at 1 Parry place until he died in 1897.

James is buried at Plumstead Cemetary along with Eliza his wife, Elizabeth his sister in law (Eliza's sister), his daughter Eliza Jane and her husband Stephen Terry.
