  • Notes
    • Louis was born 24/9/1870, to Jean Joseph Victor Ernest Ruelelens and his wife Josephine Emma Adrienne Yagues. Louis worked as a shoemaker, probably around Peckham, Newcross, where the family were now living, but had not undertaken an apprenticeship for this.

On the 19/11/1888, Louis joined the 4th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment, Service number 2412, at Maidstone. His name was altered to Lewis on this record, perhaps to fit in with British names. His notice was given to him by Sergeant Major Locks of the 3rd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment, and his attestation was witnessed by William Barrow, Sergeant Major.

His description on enlistment, was 18 years 2 months, 5ft 4 and a half inches, 122 pounds, chest size 33 inches. His complexion was fresh, with hazel eyes and brown hair. He had a tatoo of an anchor on his right forearm and 2 scars on the back of his head.

His career began at home from 19/11/1888 to 13/9/1891, where in 1891 for the census, he was stationed at the barracks in Cheriton, Folkestone.

On the 13/9/1891 the battalion left for Malta where they were stationed for 109 days until 1/1/1892. The soldiers then went on to India where they served for 5 years and 4 days. During this time on 6/2/1895, Louis was promoted to Corporal, then just a little over a year later, he was fined and the sentence reduced to the ranks of Private by 8/5/1896.

On the 6/1/1897, the battalion came home to England.

On the 7th October 1899, Louis was recalled for service in South Africa, under special army orders. He rejoined as a private on the 26/12/1899 and left for South Africa on 16/3/1900, where he stayed in the army until 18/11/1901.

Louis Joseph Victor Ernest Ruelens, recieved the Queens medal, with clasps for Wittenbergen, Cape Colony and Transvaal.

Louis remained in Africa after his discharge.

At the time of Win's birth, Louis' occupation was a railway guard.
On Elsie's birth certificate, it shows Louis as being a engineers painter.

On his death certificate, Louis is shown as being a house painter of Belvedere. [3]
