Hello Phil,
So good to hear from you and so quickly!
I enclose a family photo of Samuel and Dorcas Jane Rowlinson and family. Taken in 1914 I think, just before Ernest went away to fight in WW1. He died in 1916. Prior to this I discovered him on the 1911 census as a barman in Hornsby, London. Working with his future wife Daisy Marie Batty.
From left to right, Ernest, William, Ethel, Samuel snr, Lilian, Harry
Kate, Dorcas, Gertrude, Samuel jnr
Clara, Bertie.
Birth order was, Harry, Kate, Ernest, Gertrude, George, Ethel, Lilian, Jane, William. Samuel, Bertie, Clara. (George and Jane both died under one year old).
Gertrude (1890-1972), was my grandmother. She married William Hubert Gardiner in 1914 and my uncle Jack (William John James) was born in 1916. William Gardiner was killed in France in 1918, his twin brother John Christopher died in 1915. Gertrude Gardiner married Raymond Lidbetter in 1929 by which time she also had a daughter, Dorcas, (born 1921, father unknown). Raymond was a widower with two daughters and he and Gertrude had two children, my father Kenneth and his sister Kathleen.
Incidentally Raymond's first wife was Edith May Gardiner, sister of William and John, the Gardiner twins. She died of tuberculosis in 1926.
My grandfather Raymond was from Sussex where the surname Lidbetter is common. Raymond's father Lewis was one of sixteen children.
I know the names of spouses and children of Dorcas and Samuel's children. My father died in 2019 but there are still three of Dorcas and Samuel's grandchildren living. Samuel jnr's daughter and Clara's two sons.
I am in touch with Peter Rowlinson, grandson of Harry and his wife Eugenie. I live in Corbridge Northumberland. Peter lives in Morpeth about 30 miles from us.
You may know this information already, if so apologies. Do you have this photo of Charlotte Rowlinson, nee Cowle, 1823-1922? She was my grandmother's grandmother. She had many children who I am still sorting through! A remarkable woman who ran Bitten's farm right up until her death at 99.
I have various branches of my family to discover though an aunt on my mother's side has done a great deal of work in the 1980's which has made things clearer.
I would be interested to know how we are related.
Regards,
Steph White
