- [S10478] Carey, Ann, E-Mail from Ann Carey, 4 Jan 2020>, "Re: Proposed Change: William Elsworth (I87458)," (Reliability: 3).
Hi Phil,
Lovely to receive your email and I'll fill you in with what I know. I should point out that I have not started tracing the family, it was while I was idling away a particularly slow Thursday afternoon that I Googled Hazelbury Bryan and of the list that came up I saw William Elsworth and I knew we had a relative of that name! My connection with the Elsworth family comes through my mother. Now read on ......
I have two family bibles both of which belonged to William and Asenath of Wonston, Hazelbury Bryan. It has come down through the family that they were both Elsworth although not related and while I believe that William was originally from Mappowder, I do not know where Asenath was born and brought up. William went to work in his uncles Forge in Hazelbury Bryan and subsequently the Forge and house became his and Asenaths.
They had no children so they brought up my grandmother, who was Rosa Blanche Thorne but always called Minnie, and was Asenath's eldest sister, Charlotte's daughter.
Williams parents were:-
Simon born 19/08/1824
Elizabeth born 29/02/1827 - this must be a mistake so probably the 28th.
Their children were:-
Jane born 27/06/1848
Lydia barn 20/09/1850. Died 26/11/1931
Charles born 10/02/1853. Died 17/10/1929
Frederick born 7/03/1855
William born 27/08/1858. Died 4/08/1939
Sarah Ann born 6/08/1860
Asenath lists her parents as:-
Benjamin Elsworth born 12/02/1820. Died 16/10/1877
and Selina Elsworth born 21/02/1820. Died 04/06/1891
Their children were:-
Charlotte born 21/07/1845. Died 18/08/1920
Charles Simon born 13/?/1847. Died 13/12/1931
Deborah born 25/08/1848. Died 30/08/1937
Benjamin Marwood born 18/09/1852. Died 11/02/1914
Asenath Selina born 5/10/1856. Died 8/01/1943
Georgina born 16/11/1858. Died 18/10/1929
I'm not sure how helpful this is! There are other 'Elsworths' listed on the Deaths page but not mentioned elsewhere, for example a Simon Elsworth who died on17/03/1895 aged 70 years. Also the surnames Hallett and Hart but who their mothers were are not recorded, but no mention of Spicer, Spencer or Ricketts.
I've attached a scan from one of the bibles and can send others if it helps.
Best wishes
Ann
