- [S11008] Ballard, Linda, E-mail from Linda Ballard, 27 Jun 2022>, "Re: webtrees message - Soloman Strang," (Reliability: 3).
Hi Phil,
Here is information I have concerning Soloman and Daniel Strang. I will make a tree of all of this and forward to you.
You probably have some of this.
Soloman and his brother Daniel were glass and pottery merchants in Woolwich, Kent, England. Soloman married Rebecca Ambrose while Daniel
married Sarah Ryder and emigrated to the United States with their two children. Mary and Soloman. Soloman kept the glass and pottery business and
eventually turned it over to two of his sons, Soloman and Joshua Freeman Strang. The business is listed in Piget's Business Directory of 1840 with the two
sons as owners.
Soloman and Rebecca Ambrose Strang's daughter, Rebecca, married William Waghorn, also from Woolwich, who were grocery and cheesemongers.
When Rebecca Strang Waghorn died William Waghorn and his family emigrated to the United States on a passenger ship which docked in New York.
Soloman and Rebecca's daughter, Rebecca Eliza married Alexander Daniel Strang, a grandson of Soloman's brother Daniel, who as I mentioned
emigrated earlier to the U.S. It's unclear how this marriage was arranged.
Daniel and Sarah Ryder Strang emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in the United States around 1801. Daniel went first and opened another glass and china business.
Sarah came later with the two children and two more children were born there - Daniel, Jr. and Benjamin. Eventually, the whole family arrived in Greene County, Illinois
where Daniel began purchasing parcels of land. Two of Daniel's sons, Soloman and Benjamin also began buying land in the same area. Soloman married Elizabeth
Robinson, who was from Scotland, who had emigrated from Scotland. Soloman and Elizabeth Robertson's son, Alexander Daniel Strang, married Rebecca Eliza Waghorn,
who had come to the U.S. with her family. I believe this was prearranged in some manner as they were married soon after the Waghorn family arrived. The rest of the
Waghorn family also settled into locations in Greene County, Illinois. ( It's amazing that Rebecca Eliza Waghorn was able to leave her life in London and begin a life
in rural America to live in a homestead while raising four children.)
Alexander Daniel and Rebecca Waghorn Strang were my great grandparents. My sister and I still own the land where they settled in Greene County, Illinois.
Phil, I know this is pretty complex information, but I will send the family tree to you asap which should make this information a bit more clear.
Regards,
Linda Ballard
