  • Notes
    • From "A Real Little Seaport" by Lewis Lloyd: ' a son Griffith was baptised at Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales 3/5/1833.'

From the 1851 Census (HO107 Piece 2495 Folio 232 Page 26) Griffith, 17, a Ship Carpenter, was with his parents Griffith, 49, Trinity Pilot, and Susannah, 46, at Penygraig House, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4249 Folio 50 Page 3) Griffith, 27, a Ship Builder, was with his parents Griffith, 58, a Ship's Pilot and Susannah, 55, at (Dovey) Ter(race), Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. Also with him was his Grandmother, Mary, a widow of 88. They also had a House Servant, Catherine Jenkins, 20, from Llancynfelin, Cardigan who later married young Griffith.

From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 5602 Folio 23 Page 5) Griffith, 37, a Ship's Carpenter was with his wife Catherine, 28, at 14 (Dovey) Terrace, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5478 Folio 42 Page 5) Griffith, 47, a Ship's Carpenter, was with his wife Catherine, 40, at Dovey Terrace, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With them was their niece, Mary Jane Jenkins, 10, a Scholar.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 49 Page 12) Griffith, 57, a Ship Builder, was with his wife Cathrine, 57, at 18 Sea View Terrace, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With them were their nieces Mary J(ane) Jenkins, 20, a Domestic Servant, and Sarah L(ewis) Rees, 26, a Visitor from Llwyngwril, Merionethshire.

From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 5190 Folio 36 Page 13) Griffith Owen, a widower of 67 and a Ship's Carpenter was living with his nephew John D Hughes, 29, a Tailor's Cutter and an Employer, residing at 18 Sea View Terrace, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were his John's wife Mary J, 30, and their children David O, 3, and Catherine A, 2.

From "A Real Little Seaport" by Lewis Lloyd: Owen, Griffith (1834-1903) Ship Carpenter/Shipbuilder. Aberdovey. Griffith Owen was a son of Captain Griffith Owen of the brig 'Mediator' and, according to D. W. Morgan (Brief Glory, p. 127), like his father, he was an ardent Methodist. Catherine, his wife, was 28 in 1881 and a native of Goetre, Cardiganshire. Griffith Owen then gave his place of birth as Aberdovey, but, in 1891, it was entered as Machynlleth (this is not the case!). A niece, Mary Jenkins, aged 10, a Scholar, was living with Owen and Catherine in 1881. A 'Ship Carpenter' in 1881, Griffith Owen described himself as a 'Shipbuilder' in 1891. He could, it seems, speak English as well as Welsh. Two nieces were part of the household in 1891: Mary J Jenkins, 20, Domestic Servant, and Sarah Rees, 26, Visitor. Griffith Owen built the schooners 'John Wesley' (96 tons) 1860-61 and the 'Catherine Morgan' (80 tons). He is also reputed to have built the schooner 'Salathiel' (54 tons) at Derwenlas. Catherine Owen died 2/2/1898. aged 57. Griffith Owen, Ship Builder, died 25/7/1903, aged 70. Their home was at 18 Sea View, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.
