- School at Boxgrove School, Guildford.(Grandson John Russell Wates has 2 books presented to him as prizes)He went to Jamaica with bro. Leonard. Later after that failed he took land in Rimbey, Alberta, Canada, under the homesteading plan, where if you worked the land for 2 years, you were given the title to 160 acres. He was town clerk for Rimbey and for Lomond. He brought up his family on the farm but moved to Edmonton in about 1923 as his wife was dying of cancer. In Edmonton he ran a rooming house during the Great Depression. After his father died, his mother and sister moved to Rimbey, Alberta and took up an adjoining homestead.
