- From the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 1216 Folio 48 Page 6) John, 5, Scholar, was with his parents John, 37, Slaie Maker, born Norwich, and Sarah, 38, Shoe Binder, born Sporle, Norfolk, at 35 Trafalgar Street, Lakenham, Norwich, Norfolk, England. With him were his siblings Robert, 14, Apprentice Engine Smith, Eliza, 12, Shoe Binder, and Alice, 3, Scholar.
From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 1943 Folio 94 Page 21) John, 25, Slaie Maker (sic), was with his brother-in-law Walter Stanley, 30, Stone Mason, and sister Alice, 23, Milliner and Dress Maker, at 28 St Julian's Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England. With him was his mother Sarah, widow, 58, Milliner and Dress Maker.
A Slay Maker was a person who made the reeds or slays used in weaving. Slays (wooden pegs) or reeds were used to separate the threads on the loom.
