- Francis was a servant in the house of one William Shealer. Later he gave his occupation as a journeyman baker, working for a baker, pastry-cook and shopkeeper employing three men. The baker MAY have been his grandfather, William Hopper.
From the 1881 Scotland Census (ED101, Page 4) Francis A., 1, born Edinburgh, Scotland, was with his parents Henry, 31, Music Teacher from England, and Fanny, 24, from England, at 34 Castle Street, Edinburgh, Scotland. Also present was servant Agnes J. Henderson, 14, from Edinburgh, Scotland.
From the 1891 England Census (RG12 Piece 104 Foio 38 Page 27) Francis A., 11, Scholar born Scotland, was with his parents Henry, 41, Postman (G.P.O.) from Canterbury, Kent, and Fanny, 34, from Moulton Chapel, Lincolnshire, at 14 De Walden Buildings, Marylebone, London, England. With him was his brother Louis L., 6, Scholar born Marylebone, London.
From the 1901 England Census (RG13 Piece 498 Folio 116 Page 24) Francis, 21, Journeyman Baker from Edinburgh, Scotland, was at 16 Melbourne Street, Camberwell, London, England. He was working for William Sheeler, 59, Baker & Pastry Cook & Shopkeeper from Ore, Sussex, and his wife Mary, 63, from Quehurst, Surrey. Also present were their niece Leonora, 23, Shop Assistant from Buxton, London, and fellow servant Elizabeth Walton, 20, General Domestic Servant from Blackfriars, London. [1]
