- In 1927 my father was being educated at Tonypandy Grammer School. I don't know how long he stayed there but a few years later, probably 1930, started work at Gelli Colliery. He joined the army at the outbreak of the war and served as a Sergeant with The Royal Artillery. He saw service in North Africa. After the war he went back to the mines and worked at Fernhill Colliery, Blaen Rhondda and Parc Colliery, Cwmparc. He was employed here as a Collier and then Mines Deputy between the years 1947 until it closed in 1965. He then worked at The Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Trehafod for a short spell untill leaving to work at The Maindy Level on the mountainside above Gelli. He was employed here as a Fireman ( Mines Deputy ) for about 13 years. After leaving Maindy Level he worked with my brother Alyn, helping him in his building business untill he retired.
