ERNEST SMITH and MABEL SMITH 1
This was my Mother and Father. They were married in All Souls Church Leicester
now known as the Greek Othodox Church St.Nickolas, on the 10th of June 1916.
My Father would have been on leave from the Army during The Great War. He was
serving in The Machine Gun Corps. The Wedding ceromony was conducted by the
Vicar, the Rev.C.Carleton and the witnesses were Hamlet Smith (The Bride's
Father) and Amy Smith (The Bridegrooms Sister). His address was given as 40
Chestnut Street (Tennant at that time was Arthur Charles Langham). He was no
doubt in lodgings there as his parents had moved from Grimsby, following him,
and were living at 81 Clarendon St (Confirmed in the Polls Register (1918)at
the County Records Office, Wigston. The were in the 1920 Polls register so as
I was born at 35 Chestnut St. 15/11/1919 must have moved there Shortly before
and are shown there in the Spring 1920 Register. In 1928 the moved to 2
Beaumont Street, Aylestone, were my father ran a bookmaking business and he
lost his job through this and later "went broke". My Mother found and empty
shop at the dead end of Curzon Road, Aylestone and opened a Fish & Chip shop
which provided us with a living. Later she persuaded a builder to build a new
shop on Duncan Road and loaned her the deposit to buy it. In 1934 when
Whilst there I took a Photo-copy of the marriage entry in the Parish register,
which I now have in my possession
