Hello Phil
I'm not going to switch my laptop on again at this time of night or I'll get carried away with the details so I'll just work on my phone using my memory for now. Arthur John Tuck married Mary Ann Goff. They lived in East Dereham where she gave birth to Alice and Lily. Then they moved to Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire in about 1895(?) where she gave birth to Ellen or Eleanor, the records vary but I'd guess Eleanor was correct. This child died young. Next she had William Arthur Robert in about 1898. I have the actual dates on my PC. On the 1901 census they were back up in Norfolk at Arthur's sister's house. It doesn't say they were visiting but they must have been. Then they went back to Sawbridgeworth where my father was born on 1st March 1903. His name was George Thomas Tuck. As I told you earlier, his father, Arthur, died 3 months later in June. This left Mary with 4 young children. The two girls were sent to Devonport orphanage for a few years. Mary remarried a few years later, exact date on my PC, to Thomas Brace and had three more children but one of them died young. The surviving children were Thomas Philip Brace and Daisy Brace.
The big mystery that I can't solve is how my aunts were allowed to go to the orphanage or children's home which is supposed to only be for ex servicemen's families. I can't find any connection to any of the services.
I may not have time to look at this in detail tomorrow but I'll let you have the actual dates in due course.
Thanks for Robert's death date.
Bye for now
Norma
