1 | "On 1 July 1837 a civil registration system for births, marriages and deaths was introduced in England and Wales. Registration was undertaken by civil registrars who reported to the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London, now part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Copies of anyone's birth, marriage or death certificates can be obtained by the public. They are vital to family historians because of the genealogical information that they include." (Mark D. Herber, Ancestral Trails, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1998) Since the original birth, marriage and death registers are not open to the public, getting access to the information on one of these certificates is done by first searching the national birth, marriage and death indexes, that have been created by the GRO for this purpose. The indexes for the three events are each divided into quarterly volumes, with the names for each quarter listed alphabetically. Once an entry in one of the indexes is found, you are then able to use that information to order of copy of a death, marriage or birth certificate from the GRO/ONS. The other information that can be obtained from the index includes: Year Record type (in this database this will always be "Marriage") Quarter (March, June, September, and December) District (each county in England and Wales was divided up into registration districts) Volume Page number Note: Names were entered into the volume of the quarter in which notification of the event was received, not necessarily the quarter in which the event actually occurred. This database is an index to the marriages only and was last updated March 2006. The massive task of digitising and, making searchable, the names contained in the GRO indexes has been underway for a few years now. This database is made available to Ancestry.com users, courtesy of the volunteers of the FreeBMD organization. The leadership of FreeBMD have organized the permissions and tools necessary to enable thousands of volunteers to convert to electronic text, and publish online, searchable indexes to the civil registrations in England and Wales. Because of the nature of the index you will note that not all of the fields have been indexed all of the time. Until 1866, most of the indexes were handwritten, making the task of conversion sometimes difficult. | Source (S8519)

6 | Country wide civil registration of births, marriages and deaths commenced on 1 July 1837 in England and Wales. Registration took place at local civil registrars who in turn reported to the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London. This national index to vital records is an essential source of genealogical information for family historians. Since the original birth, marriage and death registers are not open to the public, access to the information on one of these certificates is done by first searching the national birth, marriage and death indexes, that have been created by the GRO for this purpose. The indexes for the three events are divided into volumes by year following which entries are listed alphabetically. Once an entry in one of the indexes is found, you are then able to use that information to order of copy of a death, marriage or birth certificate from the GRO. Information that can be obtained from the birth index includes: Full name of child Maiden name of mother Month and year of registration Registration district (each county in England and Wales was divided up into registration districts; jurisdictions are organized and appear as they existed at the time the record was created) Inferred county (the county is inferred based on what counties the registration district covered) Volume number Page number Note: The district listed is the district where the event was registered, not necessarily the location where the event actually occurred. 15 | The 1939 Register is one of the most important twentieth century genealogical resources for England and Wales. The 1931 census was destroyed by fire. No census was taken in 1941 because of the war. So the 1939 register is the only national census-like resource available for this period. Once war became inevitable the British Government knew they had to issue National Identity cards. They planned for the wide-scale mobilisation of the population and the eventual introduction of rationing. The most recent census was now almost a decade old, so more up-to-date statistics were needed. Some preparations had already begun for the 1941 census, so the Government capitalised on this to take a register of the civilian population. They issued Identity cards immediately afterwards (which were used until 1952). The Government constantly updated and changed the 1939 Register over time to take account of changes of address or deaths. When they introduced rationing in 1941, they planned it with information from the 1939 Register. The 1939 Register eventually formed the basis of the NHS registration system. | Source (S10553)

16 | This data collection consists of burial records from Church of England parish registers in the Diocese of Manchester, from the original registers deposited at the Manchester Libraries, Information and Archives. It includes the areas of Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Rochdale, Stretford and Trafford, Ashton-under-Lyne, Oldham, Leigh and Rossendale. About this Collection: Records are typically arranged in chronological order and contain the following information: Parish County Name of deceased Death or burial date Age at time of death Additional details such as where buried or cause of death may also be available on the original record. Parish Records: Parish records--primarily christenings, marriages, and burials--are the best source of vital record information before the nineteenth century. Before Civil Registration began in 1837, key events in a person's life were typically recorded by the Church rather than the State. Starting in the sixteenth century, parish records are some of the longest running records available. Beginning in 1598, clergy were required to send copies of their parish registers to the bishop of their diocese. These copies are known as Bishop's Transcripts. Bishop's Transcripts are useful in cases where originals are unreadable or no longer exist. In 1812, George Rose's Act called for pre-printed registers to be used for separate baptism, marriage, and burial registers as a way of standardizing records. These standardized registers are included in this collection. For earlier registers, please see the link provided below in the Related Data Collections section. 99 | HARRISON, HENRY COLDEN ANTILL (1836-1929), 'father' of Australian Rules football, was born on 16 October 1836 at Jarvisfield, the property of his uncle, Major Henry Colden Antill, near Picton, New South Wales, son of John Harrison and his wife Jane, née Howe, a relation of William Redfern, Thomas Reiby, George Howe and Horatio Wills. In 1850 the family settled in Melbourne where Harrison attended the new Diocesan Grammar School. His education was interrupted in 1852 by a visit to the goldfields, where he sympathized with the diggers' grievances. In 1853 he became an officer in the Customs Department and in 1888 transferred to the Titles Office where he became registrar. Harrison's career as a public servant was worthy, but he was most distinguished as a sportsman. For nine years he was the champion 'pedestrian' of Victoria, defeating all comers in sprints and over hurdles and steeples. His contests with the Ballarat champion, L. L. Mount, aroused great interest. A Ballarat publican and race-horse-owner, Walter Craig, was said to have once held £10,000 to wager on Mount; after Harrison won, Craig offered to finance him in a foot-racing tour of England, but Harrison preferred his amateur status. Melbourne's first football club was founded in 1858 by Harrison's cousin, Thomas Wills, a talented cricketer who was seeking a winter pastime. Harrison played in the first games, and was in succession captain of three football clubs. Wills had learned his football while at school at Rugby but considered that game 'unsuitable for grown men, engaged in making a livelihood'. The Victorian clubs evolved new rules which were consolidated in a code drafted by Harrison and adopted in 1866. It incorporated the distinctive features of the Australian game: no tripping or 'hacking', no 'off-side' rule, the 'mark' and carrying the ball. Harrison thus earned his honorific title as 'father of Australian Rules football'. He retired from playing in 1872 but maintained his interest in football. He became a vice-president of the Football Association formed in 1877; he was chairman in 1905 of the conference which formed the Australian National Football Council and was elected its first life member; he was an honoured guest at the jubilee dinner in 1908 at which Alfred Deakin proposed the toast to Australian football. He also maintained his physical fitness; in 1898 he rode a bicycle from Melbourne to Sydney in ten days to see the final Test match against Stoddart's English 11. In 1923 in Melbourne he published his autobiography, The Story of an Athlete. Harrison was handsome, lean and well groomed, somewhat unbending and puritanical, upright and honourable. He died in Melbourne on 2 September 1929, predeceased by his wife Emily, a sister of Tom Wills, and survived by four daughters. His coffin carried a wreath of violets in the shape of a football. His name is commemorated by Harrison House, the headquarters of the Victorian Football League. 106 | Here's a mystery! In 1871 Florence and Albert Hastings, grandchildren, were being looked after by Amelia Cutbush. In 1861 Florence Hastings was with her mother Ellen Hastings in Croydon. Ellen completely fits the profile for Ellen Cutbush, except that I can't find a marriage to Mr Hastings, and there is no husband at home in 1861. Ellen married ( again ?) in 1865, as Ellen Cutbush. She and John Trestain left Kent and moved all over the country. In 1871 they were in Walsall, in 1881 in Somerset. In 1881 an Albert Henry Trestain b. 1863 Hythe was in Walsall working as a Journeyman Confectioner the trade of his step-father. In 1891 he was in London, a Police Constable. In 1879 a Florence Trestain b. 1860 died in Walsall, Staffs. So it seems the children went to Staffordshire with Ellen and John, after 1871, using the name Trestain, although they had both been registered Hastings. And who was their father ? Certificate sent for. | Family F12558

164 | Margaret Harvey (nee Bound) has very kindly sent me her information about the Hamer family. Her sources are numerous: Bill Barker's Montgomeryshire Families CD Rom Dorrie Carver, deceased considered to be the Hamer expert by the Powys Family History Society, not related to my line. Eleanor Enns, we made contact through a "notice board" on the Web. We have not found a connection except possibly by marriage, she is also a Bound researcher. Michael Gibbon, our common ancestor is Abraham Hamer who married Mary Powell. He is descended through Jane Hamer who married Samuel Humphreys. Jane was the daughter of Abraham and Mary Hamer (nee Powell). He worked mainly from Dorrie Carver's notes. Anne Griffiths is descended from Sarah Hamer, daughter of Abraham Hamer and his wife, Catherine Rees. Our common ancestor is Abraham Hamer (my 7 x great grandfather) who married Sarah, surname unknown. She is also a descendant of my Powell family. Hersources include Wills, Probate Abstracts, and Parish Registers. David Humphreys is descended from Jane Hamer who married Samuel Humphreys. Jane was the daughter of Abraham Hamer and his wife Mary Powell. Gordon Pritchard, his wife is descended from Abraham and Sarah Hamer (maiden name unknown). Terry Smith stated that my Hamer line ties in through his Weale one to an Edward Lucas. His e-mail address was "@lds.net" and I wondered if he was collecting information rather than actually being a Hamer descendant. Neil Taylor, is descended from a Margaret Lucas from Llangurig who married an Edward Lewis in Cefnllys. Not sure of his connection to my Hamers, may just be gathering information. Lives in Utah. Abraham Hamer, son of Richard and Dorothy (maiden name unknown) Hamer married first cousin Sarah Hamer, daughter of John and Mary (maiden name unknown) Hamer. Abraham Hamer son of Abraham and Catherine (nee Rees) Hamer married first cousin Catherine Hamer, daughter of Henry and Catherine Hamer (nee Rees). This marrying of cousins causes some problems in the "tree" where the children of the marriages are concerned. | Source (S9979)

227 | Thomas was on board the ship "The Nile" that left England through Plymouth. Thomas arrived with his wife Jane and two children, William age 2 and a baby Mary. Also emigrating with Thomas and his family was his sister Emma and her husband Joshua and his sister Elizabeth (and Elizabeth's family.) The Nile was a 763 ton ship. It was the fifth ship that year to land in Port Adelaide form England. The Nile left Plymouth on the 11ââžâ²Žthââžâ¥ of November 1854 and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, on the 18ââžâ²Žthââžâ¥ of February 1855 with 312 Immigrants. Two deaths and eight births took place before disembarkation. In consequence of some complaints regarding the proper issue of stores, the Immigration Board assembled to investigate the matter. It appeared to the Board that certain irregularities had existed for a considerable time at sea, but the immigrants had not made their complaints known to the proper quarter to obtain redress at the time, the surgeon superintendent and master of the ship being in ignorance for some time that such irregularities existed; but when made aware of the evils, they were immediately rectified. The Board considered that, had the surgeon superintendent maintained proper supervision, such irregularities would have been discovered by him at an earlierperiod. A complaintwas made by a woman who lost her child at sea, that this child had been neglected by the surgeon superintendent. The Board found that no entry had been made in the medical journal of either the sickness or the treatment of this child. The Board, from theevidence produced at this investigation and also from personal observation of the conduct of the surgeon superintendent while he remained at Port Adelaide, were of the opinion that he was quite an unfit person to be again entrusted withthe charge of immigrants, and that the certificate for return passage should be withheld. His Excellency The Officer Administrating the Government was pleased to approve of the recommendation of The Board. The ship arrived in a dirty state between decks. It is astonishing thatvery little sickness prevailed during the voyage, only one death having occurred at sea and the other taking place while the ship lay in Port Adelaide. The Cause of death was a sudden attack of croup. | Mellen, Thomas (I104054)

428 | I cannot get the software to accept 1739 without it automatically changing to 1739/40. Ah! Double Dates Family Tree Maker can display double dates to account for the crossover between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. If you enter a date that falls between January 1 and March 25 for any year before 1753, a double date will appear. Double dates work as follows: you can type either Jan 1, 1493/4 or Jan 1, 1493/1494; both display as January 1, 1493/94. If you don't type in both of the years, Family Tree Maker interprets the year you typed as the second year. For example, if you type January 1, 1494, it's displayed as January 1, 1493/94. Info found by Gwenda Charlson: - "1740 Feb 3 Sally Dr of Thomas and Ann Whitaker from North Bradley Parish, the 11th of June last, 30 minutes past 11 o'clock at night." | Whitaker, Sally (I36129)
