Over to you with thanks

Hi Sandra,

I haven't done a lot of research on Donald but early indications are that he is one and the same. Perhaps we can chat about this?

Hi Phil,
Great website, thank you.
My father Frank was brother of John Forward (1880 - 1908) Dad never mentioned his brother marrying. I'm sure he would have done. I have seen a 1906 photograph of John in his Crichel Band uniform which suggests he wasn't living away from Witchampton. He died from TB.
Dad said his siblings only had one christian name except his eldest sister which doesn't tie in with John Thomas Forward.
I hope I am wrong as it would be good to find I have more cousins.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Take care

Hi Roy,

Many thanks for your message. You are right and I am wrong, I apologise.

The John Forward who fathered John Thomas Forward was a Cabinet Maker, not a Gardener. I have amended my database accordingly and the websites will be updated in due course.

Best wishes,

Phil.

I stumbled upon your listing of Thomas Guppy Bowring, and am intrigued to find out about your connection. My mother was the only daughter of Thomas Guppy Bowring the Younger, grandson of your TG Bowring. If you look on my family tree on Geneanet, you will find the Bowrings over to the right. There are several Bowrings in Queensland, the descendants of Tom Bowring who emigrated there in 1904.

Hi Phil,
I sent you an email on the following before I saw this, but I will post same here:
Hi,
My name is Alison Picton and I am currently trying to identify unidentified graves in our local cemetery.

I have a lena alfreds buried in our general cemetery. Could this possibly be your Elena Alfreds?
She is buried next to a very old grave, both bearing the same identical religious symbol.
I note on your family page that Elena was married to a John Alfreds who died in 1910. I also note you state that he was buried in Mungindi QLD. Do you have evidence for this? I have a suspicion that it is possible that the grave next to her is her husband, however it bears no markings.
I would love to discuss this further with you if possible.

My Aunt Winifred Beatrice Penny was the daughter of Frederick James Penny and his father was Samuel Penny born 1828 in Broad Chalke. It would be great if we could exchange info.

Hi,

Im trying to find out a little more about my grandfather on my mums side. His name was Leonard Robert Hepden and I believe his Parents were Robert Hepden and Ethel Muskett. My mother was evacuated to wales during the war and her family stayed there. My grandfather returned to London, so information is scarce. I know he remarried Violet Brown but thats where the story ends. Thanks.

It gives a lot more detail to his life than I had before. Do you have access to any pictures of John George Walters? I would love to know what he looked like. Also, do you have information on his ancestors? Thanks for having all this wonderful information. I didn't know what ship he came to America on and what he did for work and quite a few other things you provide. Judy

Your site is amazing. I am researching the Williams Family from the Llanelly/Gilwern/ Llangenny area and unfortunately can’t seem to find any connection to your Williams tree, which is amazing considering the number of Williams included. Specifically I’m interested in William Williams (1745-1825) and what line he comes from. He was the father of James (1786-1842). James was father of John (1812-1888). John was father of Edgar (1854-1936). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My grandmother Beatrice Ann was their 4th child.

Dear Phil, I've enjoyed browsing your fabulous website, thank you. I am descended from the Fenning family on my father's side although also have Welsh connections on my mother's side (Thomas Parry of Llandudno) and I lived in Machynlleth for 11 years. I am interested to know how the Fenning family relate to the Williams family. Richard Fenning and Elizabeth Pudney were my great great grandparents, their son George Fenning married Jane Wilson and their daughter Jean Wilson Fenning was my grandmother.
kindest regards

Apparently, Cyril's parents were Louis Clifford Gard and Margaret Williams but I have not yet fully investigated them.

I've been researching the Cowley family as it seemed to be a mystery to my husband and his siblings. His grandfather was Fred Cowley brother of Jack Cowley. I beleive they met Fred once. His grandmother was Olive and mother was Joan Lillian. We have discovered Aunts and Uncles we didnt know existed. I'm not sure how the Cowleys fit in here but it gave me some good information.

Thank you for your kind comments.

Fred and Jack's father, Fred Cowley (1888-1950) was my 2nd cousin's husband's father.

I would be most grateful if you could contact me with a view to filling in some of the gaps in my research.

Hi,
I am a german family researcher and I look for information about my father.
He was a germen prisoner of war in 1944-1947 in Hill Camp-Working Camp Westbury and worked in the sawmill "Sawtell" in Trowbridge.
Do you have any information about the family "Sawtell" and the sawmill within the time 1944-1947?
Hope to hear from you.
Greetings form Germany
Roswitha Baeumler
Admin Reply by: Winks
Hi Roswitha,

Doris Sawtell (b 1905), who married Henry Jack Flay, is the only person I have with that surname. A quick look reveals that she was the daughter of Charles William Sawtell and Jane Dyke. They married in Bradford on Avon in 1903.

I have not, as yet, looked into the rest of the family but you have aroused my interest! According to Ancestry (and not taking incorrect spellings and transcription errors into account) there are only 45 Sawtell births registered in Wiltshire between 1837 and 2007.

If I find anything about the family or the sawmill I will get back to you.

Best wishes,

Phil Williams.

Hi, I googled Shearing Family in Norfolk and up you popped. My Shearing family were living in York in the mid 1800s with Robert Shearing (x3 gt Gfather)being born in Wreningham, Norfolk in 1812. His father was Valentine Shearing born 1777, (married to Elizabeth Ringwood), his father was Valentine Shearing born 1746 married to Frances Scillet (Fanny), his father was John Shearing born 1721 married to Elizabeth Pitcher. His father was I believe James Shearing born in 1700 but I have not validated this. All came from Norfolk, mainly Wreningham, Docking, Ashwellthorpe, and Hethel. The Pitcher line goes back a few centuries and I noticed you have a Pitcher married to a Shearing and I am trying to see if they are connected to my Pitchers and Shearings. I don't know why my ancestor left Norfolk or if any of the family left with him. He married in York.

I meant to have added that my 6th gt-grandparents:

Peter Downing (1693 - 1754) and Elizabeth Williams(1698 -1767) of the Parish of Paul, Penzance, Cornwall, married there on 6th Oct 1722. I guess that Elizabeth was linked to your Williams family in some way.

Kind regards,

Trevor
Admin Reply by: Winks
Hi Trevor,

I am aware of the marriage date. As for Elizabeth being related to our Williams family? I think that is pretty remote as my lot were from the Welsh hills in the north not from Cornwall. Unfortunately, Williams is far too common a name to trace reliably, especially as most of my ancestors were named John!

Phil.

Hi Phil,
You have a Eliza unknown in your tree as being married to Joseph Richbell so can I suggest the following from my tree:-
Eliza Harwood, Born 1828 in Woolwich to Thomas and Mary Harwood.
Married Joseph Richbell 8th Sept 1847 at St Nicholas, Deptford, Kent.
She died in July 1862 in Greenwich.
Regards
Bob Harwood
Admin Reply by: Winks
Hi Bob,

Many thanks for your message.

Joseph Richbell was my 1st cousin's husband's great aunt's husband's uncle's wife's father! Because of the distant relationship I've not got around to researching this particular branch just yet.

I must look at this family again in greater depth as according to the GRO the mother's maiden name for Eliza, Ann, Louisa, and Joseph is indeed Harwood. However, that for Editha Ellen is Bennett. So, Editha Ellen is incorrect.

I can't seem to find a registration for an Ellen (as mentioned in the census returns) that fits. However, she was baptised in 1850 and she married George At(t)ridge in 1872.

I will now go away and do some updating.

Again, thank you for the information and if there is anything else you would like to add please get in touch.

Best wishes and stay safe,

Phil Williams.
